Devine (William J.) Golf Course opens.
October 26, 1896
Originally Abbotswood Golf Club, then Scarboro Golf Club, and popularly known as Franklin Park Golf Course, the nine-hole course is designed by Willie Campbell and located on today’s Circuit Drive. Part of the Boston park system, it is first golf course in Boston and second public golf course in the U.S. (after Van Cortland Park in New York City, which opened in April 1896). Campbell is the first club pro and is succeeded by his wife, Georgina Campbell, who becomes the first woman golf pro in the U.S. Redesigned by Donald Ross, the current 18-hole course opens in the spring of 1923, and is renamed for a former Boston parks commissioner on August 17, 1967. After falling into disrepair, the course is closed 1975, but is restored and reopens in the mid-1980s.
